Not too big… Not too small… Just right…
The key to selecting the right size rug should be determined by the size and arrangement of your furniture and the size of your room. These are helpful guidelines:
DINING ROOM:
The most common mistake in selecting a rug for a dining room is choosing an area rug that is too small. The rug should be large enough for the chair legs to sit comfortably on the rug when pulled out for people to sit.
- For a table that seats four, a 5 x 8 foot rug can be used.
- For a four to six person round table, a 6 foot to 8 foot round area rug would be ideal.
- For a six to eight person square or rectangular table, you would need an 8 x 10 foot or a 9 x 12 foot area rug in order to keep all chair legs on the rug.
LIVING ROOM/FAMILY ROOM:
Selecting an area rug for your living room depends on both the room size and the arrangement of your furniture.
- A 5 x 8 foot area rug is the most popular size for a small living space with only the coffee table centered on the rug.
- An 8 x 10 foot rug is usually used when the front legs of your furniture are positioned on the rug. This size helps to bring the room and furnishings together.
- A very popular choice for a larger room is a 9 x 12 foot rug, which often allows you to place all of the furniture on the rug and creates a warm and inviting living space.
BEDROOMS:
The rug size you should select for a bedroom will be determined by the room size and the size of the bed. It depends on how much floor space you like showing.
- A 5 x 8 rug is usually used with a twin-sized bed and can also be used with a full-sized bed, laying the rug horizontally under the bed.
- An 8 x 10 or a 9 x 12 rug can be used with a queen-sized or a king-sized bed. Laying the rug horizontally usually works best.
